Pope Francis Will Officiate His First Mass in Cuba at Havana's Revolution Square

During his visit to Cuba, from September 19th to the 22nd, Pope Francis will officiate his first Mass at the emblematic Revolution Square in Havana, where preparations are well underway, including the setting up of a wooden and iron altar, platforms for the press and space for 4,000 guests.
 
Pope Francis is the third pope to visit Cuba over the past 17 years, after John Paul II, in January 1998, and Benedict XVI in March 2012.
 
The Holy Father will meet with President Raul Castro after the Havana mass and will also visit the Cathedral of Havana.

Ecuadorian Ambassador Highlights Restoration of Cuba-U.S. Relations

The restoration of diplomatic relations between Cuba and the United States is another important victory for the Cuban Revolution, said Ecuador's ambassador to Havana, Edgar Ponce.
 
Ponce made the remarks on Monday after participating in a ceremony at the Monument erected to General Eloy Alfaro, on the occasion of the 206th anniversary of the First Independence Declaration of Ecuador.
 
This milestone, the ambassador said, has been possible due to the long struggle of the Cuban people for respect and dignity.
 

Photo Exhibition Honoring Fidel Castro Opens in Havana

A photography exhibition has opened in Havana in honor of the historic leader of the Cuban Revolution, Fidel Castro.
 
The expo was inaugurated by Cuban First Vice President Miguel Diaz Canel, along other important political and intellectual figures.
 
Portraits taken at different moments of the fruitful life of the Cuban revolutionary are on display at the José Martí Memorial, located at Havana's Plaza de la Revolución.
 

Caribbean activists demand lifting blockade of Cuba

Participants at the 6th Assembly of Caribbean Peoples, which took place in Main Camp in Curacao, approved a statement in which they demand that the President of the United States, Barack Obama, put an end to the economic, financial and commercial blockade of Cuba.
 
 Representatives of trade union, political, feminist, environmental, campesino and youth organizations from 12 countries of the area also called on Obama to return the territory illegally occupied in Guantánamo to the Cuban people.

A meeting between Cuban President Raúl Castro and Executive Vice President of Venezuela Jorge Arreaza in Havana made headlines in local media in Venezuela yesterday.

The Special Deputy representative of the UN Secretary General, Morad Wahba labeled excellent the work done by the Cuban medical brigade in Haiti.
 
Wahba said that such work is widely recognized at the highest level of the United Nations, that in various occasions highlighted praiseworthy path of the health staff in Haiti fighting the cholera epidemic and more recently in Africa in the fight against Ebola.

Nicaraguan youths will hold several events to celebrate the 89th birthday of the historic leader of the Cuban Revolution, Fidel Castro, and the 85th birthday of FSLN founder Tomas Borge on August 13.
 
According to the program prepared by the Sandinista Youth and published today on local media, the poetry recital "With Love for Tomas" will be held next Tuesday to pay tribute to the founder of the Sandinista National Liberation Front (FSLN), who died in 2012.
 

Latin American and Caribbean Brigade Demands Lifting of U.S. Blockade of Cuba

Activists with the Latin American and Caribbean Brigade of solidarity with Cuba demanded the immediate lifting of the economic blockade imposed by the United States on the Caribbean island.
 
During a ceremony celebrated Thursday at the Julio Antonio Mella International Camp in the province of Artemisa, the 170 brigade members from 13 countries issued a final declaration expressing their rejection of the U.S. economic sanctions.

Cuban Hero Attends Ceremony for 70th Anniversary of Hiroshima Bombing

Fernando Gonzalez, vice president of the Cuban Institute of Friendship with the Peoples (ICAP) and Hero of the Republic of Cuba, participated on Thursday in a commemorative event in Hiroshima for the 70th anniversary of the atomic bombing of that Japanese city.
 
A statement released by the Caribbean island's embassy in the Japanese capital says Gonzalez represented Havana in the official ceremony.
