Russian Duma President Visits Monument to Soviet Int'l Soldier

The President of the Russian State Duma, Serguei Naryshkin, will visit today in Cuba the Mausoleum of the Soviet Internationalist Soldier.
 
The visitor gave a lecture yesterday on the Soviet participation in the World War II.
 
In the event, the leader of the State Duma stressed the important Soviet role in that conflict and recalled the West attempts to distort the history to counteract importance to Russia's determinant role in defeating Nazism.
 

Cuba and China with New Bilateral Cooperation Initiatives

Cuban Foreign Trade and Investment Minister Rodrigo Malmierca and his Chinese counterpart Gao Hucheng signed a document in Beijing on Wednesday on the development of bilateral economic, commercial relations for the 2016-2020 period.
 
The two sides expressed satisfaction about the upcoming opening of a direct flight by Air China between Beijing and Havana, and Cuba announced its willingness to begin using the Chinese currency in bilateral trade relations in 2006.

The Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean, ECLAC, says that the U.S. blockade on Cuba hinders the development of that island nation, although it noted that some advancements taking place in the Caribbean country despite the economic sanctions.
 
ECLAC’s Executive Secretary Alicia Barcena said in Santiago de Chile that although some opening has taken place in sectors like tourism and trade, the truth is that the U.S. blockade continues to increase financial costs for Cuba.
 

Hillary Clinton to Call for Lifting U.S. Blockade of Cuba

Hillary Clinton, pre-candidate for the U.S. presidential elections, will call on Congress to lift the economic blockade against Cuba during a visit to the city of Miami, scheduled for Friday.
 
Clinton's campaign team said that the former secretary of state will give a speech at Florida's International University and participate in a forum of the National Urban League, an organization in the Black community of Fort Lauderdale, north of Miami.
 

Panamanian Minister Recognizes Advantages of Cuban Literacy Method

Panamanian Minister of Social Development Alcibiades Vasquez has recognized the advantages of the Cuban literacy method "Yo sí puedo" (Yes I Can), implemented in the country to learn how to read and write.
 
"This method, which includes seven weeks of continuous lessons and 65 video conferences, allows people to meet those goals easily," the minister said.
 

Malaysian Firm Bioven Seeks IPO to Help Market Cuban Cancer Drug

Malaysian biotechnology firm BIOVEN, which is developing a cancer drug discovered in Cuba, is planning a stock market flotation in London, the Financial Times reported.
 
According to Bioven’s CEO Stephen Drew, the start-up aims to raise US$30-35 million by the end of this year or early 2016 on the junior AIM market in London.
 
Bioven has put the drug -- targeted at non-small cell lung cancer -- into a larger late-stage trial and Drew said a stock market flotation would help accelerate the push to market.
 

Pastors for Peace Vows to Continue the Struggle to End U.S. Blockade of Cuba

Members of the 26th Pastors for Peace Caravan have confirmed that they will continue the struggle to lift the unjust blockade imposed by the United States on Cuba for over half a century.
 
Speaking to reporters in the central province of Sancti Spiritus, the director of the solidarity organization, Gail Walker, welcomed the restoration of diplomatic relations between Washington and Havana, but added that the blockade must end in order for relations to be fully normalized.
