Granma newspaper recalls today how the idea came about, which occurred on August 21, 2005, during the broadcast of one of the "Alo Presidente" programs, in the presence of both leaders at the Bolivar Square in the municipality of Sandino, in Pinar del Rio province, where the Venezuelan government built 150 homes for Cuban families affected by hurricanes.

Sources quoted by ABC News said the U.S. president plans to use his executive powers to ease the travel restrictions imposed by Congress on U.S. citizens wishing to visit Cuba.
 
According to ABC, the U.S. Treasury Department is now considering new regulations that would allow all Americans to travel to Cuba as individuals and not in tour groups or with other third-party arrangers.

Cuban Tobacco Production Increases

The tobacco harvest in the western province of Pinar del Rio will conclude with an additional 3,400 tons over those collected in the previous campaign.
 
Pinar del Rio, a territory in the western end of the island, is world-renowned for the quality of its tobacco crops.
 
Officials of the sector asserted that despite the drought currently affecting Cuba, the 2014-2015 harvest marked the beginning of the recovery of the tobacco sector, with a new development plan for the expansion of crops and processing facilities until 2018.

Paraguayan Doctors Thank for Training Received in Cuba

A group of 66 Paraguayans graduated in medicine in Cuba, who returned this week, thanked the training they received in the island, and expressed the desire to join as quickly as possible to work in their country.
 
The young physicians, as Ultima Hora website posts today, returned in two groups from Havana on Monday and Tuesday, after taking the career in several specialized universities in different provinces.

Army General Raúl Castro Ruz, President of the Councils of State and Ministers, received Cardinal Jaime Ortega, Archbishop of Havana, on the afternoon of Monday August 17.
 
 During the cordial meeting, the two discussed the progress of preparations for His Holiness Pope Francis’ upcoming visit to Cuba and issues of mutual interest between the Cuban State and the Catholic Church on the island.
 
Also present were Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez Parrilla and Eusebio Leal Spengler, Havana’s City Historian.
