After a night of uncertainty, firefighters gear up for the final battle against the blaze in Matanzas

The battle with a massive fire at an oil depot in the western Cuban city of Matanzas entered its 3rd day on Monday.
 
The night brought uncertainty after a huge blast past 11 pm, provoked by the collapse of a second storage tank.
 
Local authorities informed that the feared collapse of the third tank had not occurred and that an oil spill from the second tank had exceeded the expected area.
 
As a result of this blast, the most powerful since the beginning of the fire on Friday, three people were slightly injured.
 

Cuba implements first step of exchange market, announces banking system will purchase foreign currency

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economy and Planning  and Central Bank of Cuba President Martha Sabina Wilson Gonzalez appeared Wednesday on the radio and TV program Mesa Redonda to report on the implementation of the first step of the future foreign exchange market on the island.
 
As of Thursday, August 4, national and foreign individuals, the self-employed, private micro, small and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs), and cooperatives will be able to sell foreign currency, including the U.S. dollar in cash, to the country's banking institutions.

Cuba to produce antibiotics locally to save on pricy imports

Cuban health authorities announced that the Caribbean nation would produce some injectable antibiotics in high demand at  to save on their high price.
 
The list includes drugs such as Meropenem, Rocephin, and Cefotaxime, essential antibiotics for hospital use "with a broad spectrum of treatment for bacterial infections, pneumonia, and meningitis," according to the state-owned Empresa Farmacéutica 8 de Marzo.
 

Cuba to produce vital injectable antibiotics

Cuba will start up a cephalosporin plant to produce a series of injectable beta-lactam antibiotics that are widely used in intensive therapies.
 
Among them are antimicrobials Meropenem, Ceftriaxone (Rocephin), Cefotaxime, Cefazolin, Cefuroxime, Ceftazidime and Cefepime.
 
According to Granma newspaper, the plant should start producing those antibiotics before ending 2022, and it will be the only one of this kind in the country.
 
The source clarifies that 90 percent of the equipment to be used is already in Cuba.
 

Cuba reiterates support for the one-China principle

Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez today expressed his rejection of any action that harms the territorial integrity and sovereignty of the People's Republic of China and condemned interference in its internal affairs.
 
On his Twitter account, the Foreign Minister also expressed “concern about the increase in tensions and aggravation of the situation around Taiwan.”

On the occasion of the commemoration that takes place every July 30, Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez expressed on Twitter the firm commitment of the State and Government of the island to the prevention and confrontation of this serious crime.
 
Cuba has recognized international prestige, the result of exemplary work in response to this phenomenon, said Rodriguez.
