Venezuela, Cuba Ink 285 Economic and Co-op Agreements
Presidents of Venezuela, Hugo Chavez, and of Cuba, Raul Castro, presided over the closing on Saturday night of the 10th Session of the Intergovernmental Commission that wound up with the signing of 285 economic and cooperation agreements.
The agreements to be implemented next year will be carried out by 52 institutions from the two countries.
The two sides agreed during their two-day meetings at Havana International Convention Center to create 8 joint ventures on the fields of information technology and communications, food-processing, iron and steel industry, transportation and the sugar industry.
Moreover, they inked 2 memoranda of understanding to set up a joint venture on civil aviation and on hydrocarbons.
The meeting took place nine years after Venezuela and Cuba signed the Comprehensive Agreement on Cooperation that set the ground for the establishment of the Intergovernmental Commission. It was subscribed by Chavez and the leader of the Cuban Revolution Fidel Castro.
During the sessions, the two delegations reviewed programs underway and had a profound exchange of opinions about the future of their links and their participation in the Bolivarian Alliance for the Peoples of Our America (ALBA).
The two sides agreed that they made progress in their joint projects despite the deepening of the global economic crisis that specially harm Third World nations.
The meetingas Joint Statement highlights that on the health sector more than 290 million doctoras consultations were made and tens of thousand of lives saved, while Mission "Barrio Adentro II" (Inside the Neighbourhood) has set up 483 comprehensive development centers and provided 7 million dental consultations.
The Statement also underlines that Operation Miracle has provided ophtalmological care to millions of Latin American and Caribbean people, including more than one million Venezuelans and 212,000 Cubans who recovered or preserved their sight.
During the disable people survey Cuban doctors carried out in Venezuela some 226,000 people received not only medical care but also socio-psychological aid. The Cuban specialists also drew up a special policy for the treatment of these patients.
Regarding energy, Venezuela supplied Cuba with 178 million barrels of oil and other by-products, the refinery in Cienfuegos (central Cuba) was reactivated, while work is going on to expand the Hermanos Diaz refinery and on the construction of a petrochemical complex.
