US Economic Blockade Slows Down Work by Cuban Entities
The economic, commercial and financial blockade against Cuba, in force for more than 50 years, includes sanctions against entities direct or indirectly linked to the Caribbean island.
On April 4, 2014, the subsidiary of the Mexican telephony company CLARO, based in Nicaragua, announced that the promotional bonds sold to increase call time, could no longer be used to call Cuba, due to blockade laws.
Meanwhile, on April 30, 2014, MediCuba-Swiss Program coordinator Beat Schmid announced that Credit Suisse, Switzerland econd largest bank, refused to carry out transactions -in Swiss francs- to such organization, for violating laws derived from that hostile policy against the Caribbean nation.
Likewise, in January 2014, Cuban librarians belonging to the National Center for Medical Sciences Information and its specialized network of health, and other similar systems of the country, were unable to participate in the free Virtual Seminar "Global connection between new librarians: good practices, models and recommendations."
The measures imposed by the blockade have hampered the connection of those professionals, stresses the Caribbean nation report entitled "Necessity of Ending the Economic, Commercial and Financial Blockade Imposed by the United States of America against Cuba."
