Uruguayan Labor Unions Supports Release of Cuban Five

Uruguayan labor union PIT-CNT is extremely involved in backing the cause for the release of five anti-terrorist Cuban fighters unfairly sentenced in the United States, said member of the union leadership, Fernando Gamberra.

At the end of a meeting on Wednesday with Olga Salanueva, the wife of Rene Gonzalez, one of these anti-terrorist Cuban fighters, and with Abel Rivero, a leader of the Cuban Workers Federation (CTC), Gamberra told Prensa Latina that "Olga's testimony is certainly moving".

"A couple with the conviction that they are waging a necessary struggle is something worth learning from," he said.

He highlighted the meeting with Rivero "to understand the Cuban process" and the reforms being implemented in the Island.

"One ends up very upset with the despicable US blockade. They don't want to stop blockading Cuba in order to prevent a leap in the quality of life of the population," said Gamberra.

Also Olga and Rivero met with members of the PTI-CNT Gender Commission.

Olga appreciated the solidarity of the Uruguayan people and urged them continue the struggle for the total release of The Cuban Five as the only justice possible.

Gerardo Hernandez, Ramon Labanino, Antonio Guerrero and Fernando Gonzalez are serving harsh sentences for monitoring terrorist plans against Cuba organized in US territory.

Rene already served his sentence, but was punished to remain an additional three years in US territory for no reason.

Olga Salanueva travelled to Uruguay at the invitation of the ruling Frente Amplio and the PTI-CNT to give a boost to the crusade for the release of The Cuban Five and attend Labor Day celebrations.
