University Indians Celebrate Fidel Castro''s 90th Birthday
With poems, music and a documentary, Indian university students and professors here today paid tribute to the historic leader of the Cuban Revolution, Fidel Castro, on occasion of his 90th birthday on August 13.
During an activity at the University of Delhi, Professor Vidha Mauya highlighted the history and significance of Fidel Castro not only for Cuba and Latin America, but for the entire world.
Meanwhile, the Chargé d'affaires ad interim of the Cuban Embassy, Marileydis Dueñas, stressed the historical ties between Fidel Castro and India, and his numerous meetings with leaders of the Asian nation over the past decades.
The documentary "El mérito de estar vivo," which tells some of the more than 600 plans to assassinate the Cuban leader by the US government and mercenary groups based in Miami, was presented during the event.
The students also recited poems written by themselves, as well as Nicolas Guillen, Nancy Morejon and other Latin American authors.
As part of the activities, the University of Delhi began on Wednesday a Cuban Culture Festival, which will include a guitar concert, dances, another documentary and conferences about the Caribbean island.
