Swedish Solidarity Group Supports Cuban Social Process

The Swedish-Cuban Friendship Association confirmed its support today for the social process begun in the Caribbean island in 1959, and that has been the target of continuous slander ever since, orchestrated by mainstream media.

In remarks to Prensa Latina, Osterlin Martin, chairman of the organization, said that the mass media connected with major finance capital are engaged in portraying a negative image of Cuba, and at the same time creating a state of disinformation.

For example, many Scandinavians are unaware of the devastation left in Cuba by Hurricane Sandy after it passed through the eastern provinces of Santiago de Cuba, Holguin and Guantanamo in October, Osterlin pointed out.

"Our intention is to inform people about what happened in Cuba, and continue collecting money (for hurricane affected), although we already have a partial collection in crowns donated by Swedish artists and musicians," he said.

It is not only about financial resources, but also about sending a message of solidarity with Cuba to the world, he said.

"We are dedicated to sharing the truth about Cuba with the world, hence we all must contribute by bringing truthful information about Cuba to our countries," Osterlin said.

Osterlin is part of the 55th Nordic Brigade of Solidarity with Cuba that is carrying out voluntary agricultural work at the Julio Antonio Mella International Camp (CIJAM), located in the municipality of Caimito, in Artemisa province.

The group, which includes almost fifty people, expects to visit historical-social sites and talk with relatives of the five Cuban antiterrorist fighters unjustly held in the United States since 1998.

Antonio Guerrero, Fernando Gonzalez, Ramon Labañino, Rene Gonzalez and Gerardo Hernandez were condemned to exaggerated sentences, for reporting violent plans against Cuba organized by terrorist groups based in Florida.

The 55th Nordic Brigade of Solidarity with Cuba consists of professionals and young people from Sweden, Norway, Finland, United Kingdom, Belgium, Denmark, Germany, Ireland and other countries from Scandinavia and northern Europe, and will remain at the CIJAM until January 5th.
