A sublime brushstroke for Cuba

Floral wreaths from the leader of the Revolution, Army General Raúl Castro Ruz, and Communist Party of Cuba First Secretary Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez adorned the funeral tribute to renowned artist Ernesto Rancaño.

The remains of the man who painted poetry and captured the Martí dwelling in the soul of the homeland, to which he devoted his life and sublime brushstrokes, were placed in the San Francisco de Asís convent, in the historic center of Havana, for the ceremony, attended by Minister of Culture Alpidio Alonso, and many admirers.

In his remarks, essayist and historian Felix Julio Alfonso Lopez noted that Rancaño’s earthly transit was relatively brief, but the transcendence of his work will redeem him from that injustice.

Norma Rodriguez Derivet, president of the National Visual Arts Council, spoke about Rancaño, who, she said, found in the flight of his hummingbirds the iconographic richness he was able to give his portrayals of National Hero Jose Marti, Fidel and Che. She recalled his great human sensitivity, spirit of solidarity and generosity.
