Spanish Municipality Asks Obama to Free Cuban 5 Imprisoned in USA

The municipality of Etxarri Aranatz, in the Community of Navarra, passed a motion today asking U.S. President Barack Obama to release three Cubans who have remained imprisoned in that country for the better part of two decades.

The Extarri Aranataz decision joins those previously taken by Villa de Ochandiano and Larraungo, in the Basque Country, and Usurbilgo, also in Navarra, which are all demanding the release of the three Cubans.

The motion demands that Obama use his executive privilege to end an unjust situation, by releasing Gerardo Hernandez, Ramon Labañino, and Antonio Guerrero.

Along with Fernando Gonzalez and Rene Gonzalez, home again in Cuba after having completed extremely long prison sentences, the three Cubans are part of the Cuban Five, as they are known worldwide.

The men were arrested after monitoring extremist groups operating within the United States who were carrying out terrorist attacks against their country. They were sentenced to excessively harsh prison terms after a trial which impartial observers ranging from the United Nations to Amnesty International have determined was arbitrary, carried out in an extremely hostile atmosphere in the U.S. city of Miami.
