Russia Reconfirms Opposition to U.S. Blockade Against Cuba

The Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs reconfirmed today the position of the Russian State supporting an immediate cessation of the economic, financial and commercial blockade maintained by the United States against Cuba for more than 50 years, to the detriment of the welfare of millions of Cubans.

The foreign ministry recalled that most countries worldwide have repeatedly supported the international call to end this kind of retaliation, a relic of the Cold War, the entity told Prensa Latina.

Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov presented Russia's traditional stance regarding Cuba's draft bill against the blockade, during the 67th session of the UN General Assembly on September 28, 2012, the Foreign Ministry recalled.

The Russian stance represents a kind of "barometer" regarding the international community's view of the issue.

In the vote held in late 2012, some 186 States voted for lifting the blockade, two voted against, and three abstained, the foreign ministry stressed.

The ministry ratified Moscow's intention to firmly support Havana and remain consistent regarding the blockade, prior to the upcoming Universal Periodic Review (UPR) of the Caribbean country at the UN Human Rights Council.

Cuba denounced that as a result of "this economic, financial or commercial war," the Caribbean nation has suffered damages valued at $1.066 trillion dollars through 2011, considering the depreciation of that currency against the value of gold in the international market.

The The Russian Duma (lower chamber) adopted some 10 resolutions since 1994 against the blockade, and on November 20 last year approved a new appeal to the parliaments of U.N. member States on the need to eliminate that retaliatory policy against the Cuban people, the Foreign Ministry reported.
