Russia: Obama''s Visit to Cuba Reverses a Historical Error

The visit of President Barack Obama to Cuba will help reverse a historical error in Washington''s policy toward the island, said the spokesperson of Russia''s Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova.

Zakharova said at a news conference that the visit is part of a process that reflects a change in this reality.

She confirmed that Russia is in favor of the development of relations between Cuba and the United States. She also expressed her hope that the relationship would be built on a basis of equality and mutual respect, without the imposition of a model of politics or of socio-economic development on Cuba.

According to the official, one of the priorities in this process is the end of the economic, commercial and financial blockade against Cuba, as well as US sanctions, both of which have been condemned by many in the international community.

Another important issue is the fact that the US still maintains the military base in Guantanamo (which is Cuban territory illegally converted into a prison).

The spokeswoman said that Obama's visit to Havana was undoubtedly a significant event in the history of the two countries, and pointed out that the process of the normalization of relations does not affect cooperation between Russia and Cuba.

Russian-Cuban relations have everything that is necessary to increase their potential, and both parties desire consolidating them in a spirit of constructive cooperation, said the diplomat.
