Rafael Correa Sends Hugs to Fidel Castro and Cuban People

Ecuadorian President Rafael, who was sworn- in on Monday for a second term in office until 2013, sent greetings to the leader of the Cuban Revolution Fidel Castro and to the people of the Caribbean archipelago.

During an improvised and vibrant speech after the swearing-in ceremony at the plenary hall of the Ecuadorian National Assembly in Quito, Correa asked President Raul Castro, heading the Cuban delegation to the event, to hug Fidel and the Cuban people on his behalf.

Correa recalled that, as part of his government’s foreign policy, Ecuador supported the Organization of American States (OAS) General Assembly’s decision to eliminate a resolution suspending Cuba from the regional organization since 1962.

Correa, who was elected president in November 2006, won his re- election last April after the people of Ecuador approved a new Constitution in September 2008.
