Paraguay: Communists Support Cuba on Anniversary of Revolution

Paraguay's Communist Party (PCP) called today for solidarity with Cuba on the 54th anniversary of its revolution, highlighting Cuba's support to Paraguay.

A communiqué from the organization recalled Cuban aid in granting scholarships to hundreds of young people with scarce resources that could not afford to study in Paraguay.

The statement also highlighted Cuba's contribution through Operation Miracle, which has returned the gift of sight to thousands of Paraguayans, free of charge.

When referring to the anniversary of the Cuban revolution, the PCP noted that the overthrow of tyrant Fulgencio Batista and the people's takeover of their country in 1959 marked the beginning of a new era of national and social liberation for Cuba and Latin America.

The communiqué also highlighted the example and teachings of the Cuban revolution that had a strong influence in Paraguay and for its people as they fought against the tyranny of Alfredo Stroessner (1954-1989).

To mark this anniversary, Paraguay must support the Cuban people and demand the release of the Cuban Five, Gerardo Hernández, Ramón Labañino, Antonio Guerrero, Fernando González and René González, who are unjustly imprisoned in the United States.
