One More Call to Revitalize the UN General Assembly
The revitalization of the UN General Assembly is gaining new strengths on Sunday in the main debates of the organization, together with the insistent demand of reforming its increasingly questioned Security Council.
Both issues stood out in recent discussions at the Assembly which the UN Charter describes as the main deliberative body and center for policy and decision making.
Its current President, Libyan diplomat Ali Treki, talked on Thursday about the need to preserve the main role of the UN General Assembly and its authority, "which have been eroded in the past few years," he stressed.
Most of speeches reiterated that demand, termed a political key issue given the Assembly's authority and essential responsibilities.
Speakers highlighted its role in the planning and identification of objectives of all the UN system, agencies and programs, demanding respect for its functions and powers.
One of the strongest statements about this issue was made by the Algerian UN representative Moirad Benmehid.
On behalf of the Non-Aligned Movement, Benmehid slammed the continuous Council's attempts to invade the Assembly's powers and prerogatives.
Cuba's permanent representative Pedro Nunez Mosquera called on the Security Council to stop meddling in questions that are clearly included within the functions and powers of other UN bodies.
Recent discussions at the Assembly's plenary sessions also centered on performance of the Security Council which is comprised of 15 members, five of them permanent with veto power (the United States, France, Great Britain, Russia and China) and 10 non-permanent members.
