One of Cuban 5 Faces Re-Sentencing Hearing
Antonio Guerrero, one of the five Cuban anti-terrorist fighters unfairly imprisoned in the United States since 1998, presents Tuesday before a Miami court to be re-sentenced.
The hearing of Guerrero, sentenced to life imprisonment and ten years, precedes those of Fernando Gonzalez and Ramon Labañino, which were postponed after Judge Joan Lenard issued an order responding a defense team's request.
The three Cuban anti-terrorist fighters have been pending of a re-sentencing hearing, according to a verdict by the Eleventh Circuit Court of Appeals in Atlanta, which annulled previous sentences for being termed incorrect during a murky trial.
Guerrero, Labañino, Gonzalez, as well as Gerardo Hernandez and Rene Gonzalez, are currently serving harsh sentences ranging from 15 years to double life imprisonment, for merely gathering information about terrorist activities carried out by anti-Cuban organizations in Miami, Florida to prevent the deaths of Cuban and even US citizens.
Several Nobel prizewinners, presidents, diverse figures, and jurists worldwide have supported the cause of the Cuban Five, as they are universally known.
Since 1959, groups of Cubans settled in the United States have organized and executed terrorist actions against Cuba, among them, the explosion in mid air of a commercial aircraft, bomb attacks in Havana hotels in 1997, and machine-gunning of coasts and ships.
