New Dawn for LatAm, Caribbean
The Cancun Unity Summit will go beyond history for its decision of creating the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States, a regional forum in which all the region''s countries, without exclusion, are included.
"This organization will allow us to make progress with our own vision and aspirations," Ecuador's President Rafael Correa said.
The respect for territorial integrity, defense of sovereignty and the right of each State to build its own political system, free of threats, aggressions and coercive measures, are some of the principles the group will observe.
The decision of creating the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States has an historic importance, Cuban President Raul Castro stated.
Addressing the meeting at the Riviera Maya, near Playa del Carmen, the statesman stressed the celebration in Caracas of the 2011 summit will be a timely moment to conclude the organization's preparation works and implement them.
The idea of creating a regional community excluding the United States and Canada was suggested by several leaders at the Latin American and Caribbean Summit on Integration and Development, held in Costa de Sauipe, Brazil, in December 2008.
So far, the countries of the region had not met as a whole in 200 years. Bolivian President Evo Morales termed this event unprecedented and a hope for the people that fight for social justice.
As well as integration, the meeting adopted several statements, including, one in solidarity with Haiti, and that referred to the energetic rejection to the US blockade on Cuba.
The summit expressed solidarity with Ecuador faced with the decision of the Financial Action Group of including the country in the list of nations with alleged strategic defficiencies in measures against money laundering. Latin American and Caribbean countries expressed support for Argentina's legitimate rights in her dispute over the Falkland Islands, and spoke out against Great Britain's unilateral actions of carrying out oil exploitations in the area.
The Community of Latin American and Caribbean States will gather 550 million people from 33 countries.
