Namibian President Rejects US Blockade on Cuba
President of Namibia, Hifikepunye Pohamba, reiterated today at the United Nations his call for the immediate, unconditional lifting of the US blockade against Cuba.
Pohamba recalled that every year, during the general debate of the Assembly, the majority of member countries of the UN express their concern about the continuous economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed unilaterally against Cuba.
He said that siege has adverse effects on the Cuban people, for which "Namibia reiterates its call for the immediate and unconditional lifting of the blockade."
In the same inaugural session of the presidential meeting, Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff also demanded to the UN plenary the end of the siege of Cuba.
"It is time to put an end to this anachronism, condemned by the immense majority of UN member countries," said Rousseff, referring to the successive condemnations of the measure by the General Assembly in the past 20 years.
Rousseff highlighted advances registered by Cuba in the updating of its economic model, and warned that in order to continue on this path, the Island needs support from close and distant allies.
However, she lamented that cooperation for CubaâÖs development is hindered by the economic blockade hitting its population for decades.
This year, the top UN body will adopt again a resolution titled "Necessity of ending the economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed by the United States of America against Cuba".
