Jurists Demand Release of Cuban Five
Members of National Union of Cuban Jurists (UNJC) demanded today from the government of President Barack Obama the immediate return of the anti-terrorist Cuban fighters unfairly held in US prisons since 1998.
Heroes Gerardo Hernandez, Antonio Guerrero, Fernando Gonzalez, Ramon Labanino and Rene Gonzalez -internationally known as The Cuban Five-- were detained for alerting the US and Cuban governments about Miami-based terrorist groups operating against their country.
This case is not purely legal; they turned it into a political trial, said lawyer Nuris Pinero in a forum held in the UNJC headquarters attended by relatives of The Cuban Five, as well as friends of Cubans and President of the Cuban Institute of Friendship with the Peoples, Kenia Serrano.
Pinero denounced the continuous irregularities committed during the trial, including the no presentation of incriminating evidence of their alleged involvement in actions against US national security.
She also criticized the role played by the media, mainly in Florida, in generating a set-up to manipulate the truth and the government of Washington for paying journalists hundreds of thousands of dollars in this media sham.
The rights of Cuban Five and their families were also violated repeatedly, said Pinero in the forum held to mark the Legal Worker Day and also as part of the international drive 5x5 (Five Days for the Cuban Five), with epicenter in Washington.
Pinero noted that US President Obama has enough authority to send The Cuban Five back home.
