June: Cuba's Highest Temperature since 1951
The National Climate Center of the Cuban Meteorology Institute stated that June had the highest temperature for that month in the island since 1951, media outlets reported on Tuesday.
That temperature was above normal throughout the country, with higher records of 28.8 degrees Celsius in western and central zones, Granma newspaper stated.
Havana, Havana province, Cienfuegos, Villa Clara, and Sancti Spiritus were the provinces in which the thermometers rose more than usual.
The Cayo Coco and Cienfuegos weather stations, both in the country's central region, scored two absolute monthly records of maximum temperature with 35.1 degrees and 36.6 degrees on June 4 and 5, respectively.
The Climate Center also stated that sea-surface temperature over the Atlantic Ocean and the Caribbean Sea has reached similar or higher average values in the last three months compared with 1998 and 2005.
That situation, coupled with the expected occurrence in July and August of the La Niña weather phenomenon, which cools surface waters of the Pacific Ocean, could increase storm activity in the Atlantic basin.
