Havana Turns 496 Years
Declared among the new seven Wonders Cities, Havana justifies that and many other recognitions remembered today when it turns 496 years of existence.
The well-preserved urban landscape, thanks to the actions carried out by the City Historian's Office, Eusebio Leal, the Ministry of Tourism (Mintur) and other city entities, looks like a Babel regarding language, understandings, and people.
Definitely founded on November 16, 1519 in the shade of a leafy Ceiba tree, Havana, capital of Cuba, became a very cosmopolitan city full of travelers from around the world eager to know it in depth.
Here we can see the main benefits of tourism, as unification and common understandings of different cultures and peoples.
Cuba, and Havana as an essence, depicts a mixed town, where main origins are from Spain and Africa, but also converge Chinese, Haitian, German, French, Hebrew and people from many other parts.
The villa of San Cristobal de La Habana, its real name, was founded on the shores of Carenas port, after it had an initial settlement in the southern region in 1515.
Its bay was a meeting place for the Spanish fleet on its journey to the metropolis to bring the riches of the Western Hemisphere, guarded by war vessels.
Its particular attraction is seen as a city invaded by pirates in 1555 and by the English fleet in 1792; its walls and shelters preserve pieces, stones, and remains of great value for travelers.
All its wealth was awarded by Unesco (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) to declare it a World Heritage Site in 1982.
It is the capital of the Republic, covers 732 square kilometers, and has 15 municipalities, and nine of them are entirely urban. The Old Havana has 4.5 square kilometers, the most interesting area covers 2.5 square kilometers.
Havana was selected in December 2014 as one of the seven wonders of world cities, within the New7Wonders initiative
