Free the Five: Celebration of World Day to Support Torture Victims
The UN International Day in Support of Victims of Torture on Wednesday will be devoted to the Cuban Five, unjustly imprisoned in the United States for almost 13 years.
The Cuban UN Association and International Committee to Free the Five organized a meeting here, featuring talks by relatives and experts on their case.
The Cuban Five are Gerardo Hernandez, Ramon Labañino, Fernando Gonzalez, Antonio Guerrero and Rene Gonzalez, who are beingheld in U.S. prisons for warning Cuban authorities about violent actions by anti-Cuban organizations in the United States.
The five men received long prison sentences of up to two double life terms after a political, rigged trial in Miami that violated U.S. and international law.
The Five have been subjected to harsh treatment in prison, including being forbidden from receiving visits from their wives and close relatives and long periods of solitary confinement.
Recently, web surfers from more than 15 countries supported freedom for the Cuban Five during a forum organized by the Radio Cubana website: www.radiocubana.cu.
The forum received hundreds of messages from the United States, Spain, Switzerland, Italy, France, Mexico, Venezuela, Peru, Canada, Guatemala, El Salvador, Argentina, Brazil, and Cuba.
