Francis, a Pope Fan of Soccer, Preaches in a Land of Baseball
Besides being High Pontiff of the Catholic Church, Pope Francis is an unconditional fan of Argentinean soccer club San Lorenzo de Almagro, who now brings his sermon to Cuba, land of syncretism and baseball.
That's right, previous Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio was a "crow", emblem of the San Lorenzo's followers, seeing since he was a kid the blue-red cyclone in the old Gasometer of the Almagro neighborhood and never hid his love for soccer.
In fact, he said mass on the 100th anniversary of the club founded in 1908 by priest Lorenzo Massa and even received the associate card with number 88235, allowing himself to make jokes on rivals as the Boca Juniors.
It occurred recently, when another Ciclon follower asked him at Saint Peter's Square if the 'xeneizes' would win, Francis answered smiling: 'Crows like pizza', alluding to the Italian heritage of the La Boca neighborhood in Buenos Aires.
The club he loves has not forgotten his fidelity either, and when he was elected Christ's Vicar they congratulated him and made public
his passion as fan and associate of San Lorenzo.
'Let it be known that for us he is not just another Pope or the first Argentinean Pope or a Jesuit; he is the Pope of San Lorenzo, or in plain soccer slang, the First Crow Pope', emphasizing the institution in their message.
Soccer has also been source of inspiration in his sermons and during a recent visit to Brazil, he used stadium language of the most universal of sports to send his religious message.
Among other things, he said Jesus invited everyone to be part of his team, offering something bigger than the World Cup, although to become his pupil, he required to train in a double shift. 'When one sweats the shirt trying to live like Christians, we lead a full life, said Francis before rounding off:
'Be protagonists, play forward, kick forward and build a better world'
Now he arrives to a country where baseball is considered the real national religión, although soccer wins ever more followers and fans are divided between Brazil or Argentina.
But in cloudy times for the Canarinha and with Leo Messi venerated as 'Godâ' of soccer, Pope Francis will find in Cuba a lot of
'white-blue' passion, another link of empathy for this 'crowâ' that comes as Missionary of Mercy.
