FIHAV 2010, Cuba's Top Trade Fair Underway

The 28th Havana International Fair, FIHAV 2010, opened on Monday with exhibitors from 52 countries.

The first day will include activities to highlight the countries of Spain and Italy, and professional visits will begin at the ExpoCuba fairgrounds, according to the fair's organizing committee.

The organizing committee, headed by Abraham Maciques, ranks Spain once more as the largest delegation, along with Canada, China, Italy, Panama, Venezuela and Brazil.

More than 30 chambers of commerce and other trade advocacy organizations have arranged seven conferences, including on the Sucre Currency and its Outlook; Investment Prospects in Cuba; the Cuba-Venezuela Trade Policy, and Economy in South Africa.

The Cuban minister of foreign trade and investment, Rodrigo Malmierca, said the event has traditionally generated new business, and often contracts are signed during the Fair.

This year, Nov. 2-5 will be devoted to focusing on different branches of the economy to enhance the experience of participants, he said.

Organizing Committee president Maciques stressed that since its takeoff in 1983, the FIHAV has become a powerful way of creating gaps in the U.S. blockade against Cuba.
