Fidel Castro, Ban Ki-moon Meet

The historical leader of the Cuban Revolution, Fidel Castro, received U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, who is attending as a guest the 2nd Summit of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC).

During the meeting, held yesterday afternoon, both leaders discussed many issues that have had decisively influence in the regional conflicts concerning and affecting different peoples.

Fidel Castro and Ban Ki-moon considered as a priority to work for the sustainable development and contribute to the reduction of the main causes of the climate change and its devastating effects.

They agreed the imperative to fight with concrete measures for the nuclear disarmament and against the dangers to humanity and can lead to a war of incalculable proportions.

During the meeting, they talked of the need to reach a world of peace, and stressed the responsibility corresponding to political leader to reduce extreme poverty, hunger, unhealthiness, inequality, and achieve the economic and social development.

The visitor was pleased for his stay in Cuba, praised the changes taking place in the Cuban economies and society and, particularly, recognized the results of the country in health, education, and other indicators of the social development, as well as its solidarity contribution to other nations, despite limitations and difficulties.

Ban Ki-moon highlighted the fulfillment by the Cuban government of the Millennium Goals and the permanent collaboration with the U.N. System.

The meeting was characterized by a deep and relaxed dialogue.
