Extraordinary G-77 + China Summit Raúl calls for renewing commitment to a more just world

With words spoken by Ernesto Che Guevara for Cuba, some 50 years ago, during the First United Nations Conference on Trade and Development in Geneva, the first plenary session of the Group of 77 + China Summit was opened on Sunday, June 15.

Leaders from throughout the world, meeting in Santa Cruz de la Sierra, listened again to Che’s evaluation at that time. In this way Bolivia welcomed participants in the gathering, which, as President Evo Morales said, constitutes a unique opportunity to share experiences and policies being implemented.

Among the first speakers June 15, Cuban President Raúl Castro Ruz, called upon participants “To take advantage of this 50th anniversary of  G-77 to renew our common commitment to pool our efforts and close ranks to build a much more just world.”

He asserted, “The gap between the North and the South is now widening, and the deep global economic crisis has become the longest and most difficult of the last 80 years, as a result of the irreversible failure of neoliberalism imposed by the principal centers of power, with a devastating impact on our countries.”

Raúl additionally reaffirmed Cuba’s support for the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, against which the most sophisticated subversive methods are being employed, in what has been described as a non-conventional war.

He denounced the U.S. blockade imposed on Cuba, terrorists attacks and the country’s spurious inclusion on the State Department’s list of state sponsors of terrorism. He thanked the members of the Group of 77 plus China for the solidarity shown Cuba over many years.

After Raul’s comments, Evo took the floor to address Fidel, “who must be closely following the Summit via the media. From here, a greeting for our brother Fidel, may he continue being the man who has shown the most solidarity in the world.”

During the Summit’s first two days, the Cuban President additionally met with several leaders also in attendance, including Ban Ki Moon, United Nations general secretary; Sri Lankan President Mahin­da Rajapaksa; and Iran’s Vice President Eshagh Jahangiri. He met Argentine President Cristina Fernández around midday on Sunday and later in the afternoon, Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro Moros.
