Excellent Relations between Panama and Cuba

Panama's ambassador in Havana, Luis Gómez, described the current relations between the two nations as excellent.

During his statements to ACN, on the occasion of the 105th anniversary of his country's independence on November 3, Gómez compared the current status of these bilateral ties to those of the times of General Torrijos and Cuban President Fidel Castro.

The diplomat expressed that, in terms of cooperation, accords of mutual help have been signed in the fields of medicine, education, energy, sports, and science, and that another in the sphere of trade is in process.

Among the festivities to mark the 105th anniversary of his country's liberation, he highlighted the 1st Festival of Panamanian Students in Cuba, a tribute to Cuba's National Hero, José Martí, and the inauguration on Monday of the Panama Pavilion, at Havana's International Trade Fair.

While referring to the academic training received by young Panamanians studying in Cuba, he said that he hopes they will acquire a high level of knowledge in science and other subjects, but that at the same time they learn from the solidarity and humanism of the Cubans.

With respect to the cooperation of Panamanian workers after the passage of hurricanes Gustav and Ike through Cuba, Luis Gómez said that they did their bit for the recovery of the archipelago, with the sending of food and construction materials.

As for the Five Cuban anti-terrorism fighters unjustly incarcerated in the United States, he said that the First Congress of Panamanian Parliamentarians approved a resolution to condemn this injustice, calling upon Latin American parliaments to join the international struggle for their release.

"We have learned from the organization and solidarity of the Cuban people. That's why you can count on the support of the Panamanians in your just cause," he concluded.
