Electricity Services Restored in to Hurricane Hit Areas
The electricity service has been restored in most of the territories affected by hurricanes Ike and Gustav, said power company executive Ricardo Gonzalez on The Round Table television program on Tuesday.
In the province of Camaguey, 99.99 percent of the service has been restored; 98 percent in Holguin and 93.2 percent in Las Tunas, in Pinar del Rio and the Isla de la Juventud the figure is 96 percent, reported Granma newspaper.
The municipalities of Manati and Puerto Padre in Las Tunas; Gibara in Holguin and La Palma in Pinar del Rio are now at between 80 and 90 with power; and Jesus Menendez in Las Tunas has 55 percent hooked up. In these provinces, 72,000 people are still without electricity. Gonzalez said an intense effort is being made to restore power to those families and that the brigades of lines workers will remain mobilized until the last consumer has service.
The official noted that the speedy restoring of electricity is mainly due to the capacity of trailer mounted generators operating on a temporary basis. He said work continues to connect the population to the national grid.
Gonzalez also said that to save energy Cuba’s clocks will return to standard time on October 26.
