Cuban Program Continues Fighting against Malaria in Angola

Cuban anti-vector program for the control of malaria and other diseases transmitted by mosquitoes and rats continues after being successfully implemented for five years in the 18 provinces of Angola, said here today a health authority.

For the outstanding work of 145 Cuban collaborators and 1, 600 Angolan brigade members in 130 municipalities, with about 20 million people, a marked decrease mosquito populations was reported, told Prensa Latina the coordinator of the national plan, Yoenys Hidalgo Flores.

He explained that the project, which began on January 23, 2009, is applied in coordination with the Ministry of Health of Angola and the National Malaria Programme.

Official reports reveal that infectious disease is one of the major health problems in the African country where some 3.7 million cases were reported in 2010, however a strong reduction has been reported in recent years.

Under the leadership of the Cuban company Pharmaceuticals Biological Laboratories (Labiofam), the vector control program develops important actions such as the development of an entomological map for the early warning system, according to the hazards of the area.

Cuban specialists also prioritize the implementation of Bactivec and Griselesf biolarvicides in breeders and Bactivec minidose intradomiciliary.

Bactivec, Labiofam product, acts effectively on the larvae of mosquitoes of the genera Aedes, Culex, Anopheles, Mansonia, Psorophora and black flies, between the first and third stages of life with high mortality between 24 and 28 hours after application.

Activists also implemented methods of community health work, which is to sensitize the Angolan population on how to prevent malaria and how to eradicate vectors.

According to the coordinator, rat control campaigns with Biorat rodenticide are also part of the project.

Parallel to these actions, the national authorities seek to prevent diseases through sanitation of cities and rural districts, with the elimination of water ponds and dumps.

The sources say that malaria is endemic throughout the country, with high transmission in the Northern provinces, moderate in the center and low, with occurrence of epidemics in the south.

Collaborators from the Corporacion Antillana Exportadora (ANTEX) are involved in every task promoted by the Angolan Health Ministry with the objective of improving the living conditions of this sister nation, said Hidalgo.
