Cuban President Leaves Russia

Cuban President Raul Castro departed on Wednesday from Russia to the People"s Republic of Angola, after concluding a one-week official visit on an invitation by his peer Dmitri Medvedev.

Government Vicepresident Igor Sechin, Foreign Viceministrer Serguei Riabkov and Russian Federation"s Ambassador to Cuba Mijail Kamynin went to Vnukovo-2 airport on the outskirts of Moscow to bid farewell to the Cuban president.

On the Cuban side, Minister Council Vicepresident Ricardo Cabrisas and Cuban Ambassador to Russia Juan Valdes went to the terminal.

After Venezuela and Brazil, Russia is the third country that Raul Castro has visited since he was elected president of the Cuban Minister and State Councils, and the first European country.

The president held meetings with his peer Dmitri Medvedev, one of them a private meeting at countryside residence in Zavidovo, in the surrounding areas of this capital, and a second meeting, as part of the official talks, at the Kremlin on Friday.

Both sides called the visit a new page of the historic relations that link Russia and Cuba, and a time of relaunching all relations, from those in the trade and economic spheres to the cultural field.

He also met with Prime Minister Vladimir Putin, who also talked with members of the Cuban official delegation.

Raul assessed his visit to Russia and said there were intensive and positive working days to continue strengthening bilateral relations.

He said the negotiations developed in a positive atmosphere, with consensus in the issues debated.

He also said Putin"s visit to Cuba in 2002, opened a new collaboration stage between Moscow and Havana, and marked a time to reopen the Russian-Cuban relations.

The Cuban president also praised Medvedev"s working trip to Havana in November, 2008, with important results to consolidate relations at the highest level.

Raul Castro and Medvedev signed on Friday a Memorandum about the Principles of Strategic Collaboration between both countries and the 9th Inter-Government Committee Session Final Declaration in this capital from February 22-24.

In the presence of both statesmen, nine documents were signed, of which an agreement in the transportation sector, between Cuban Tradex and Russian KAMAZ companies, and an agreement to grant free food aid, devoted to the Cuban provinces affected by three hurricanes, were the most important.

Medvedev told press they worked and signed 34 documents, including agreements and memorandums of understanding.

The head of the Kremlin visited Havana in November, 2008, when he met Raul Castro and leader Fidel Castro.
