Cuban Poet Speaks on Jose Marti in Mexico
As part of a cycle on Jose Marti and Our America, taking place at the Book University House in Mexico, poet Waldo Leyva gave a lecture on the relevance of the Cuban national hero's thoughts.
"Heredia en Marti" (Heredia in Marti) (1853-1895) was the issue of Leyva's lecture. Leyva serves as cultural counselor of the Cuban embassy in Mexico.
The writer and diplomat highlighted Marti's vision on the work and life of Jose Maria Heredia (Santiago de Cuba, December 31, 1803- Toluca, Mexico, May 7, 1839) and its significance for the Cubans.
Marti described the singer at Niagara Falls as "the first poet of America," Leyva said, explaining that Heredia also noted that, as a patriot, he awoke in his soul as in that of all Cubans, an unquenchable passion for freedom.
With a weekly frequency, the conference began on August 7 and will run until October 9, always with venue in that institution connected with the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM).
As well as Leyva, doctors Alfonso Herrera Franyutti, Salvador Morales, Adalberto Santana and Adriana Lamoso have spoken on Marti and Our America.
The event is sponsored by the UNAM, the Coordination of the Humanities, the Research Center on Latin America and the Caribbean, Cuba's embassy in Mexico, and the Book University House.
