Cuban Health Staff Saves Over 292,000 Guatemalans

Cuban health personnel saved 292,640 Guatemalans from November 1998 until the end of October 2014, according to estimates issued by the Cuban Medical Brigade and published today here.

From January to October 2014, the number of Guatemalans saved totaled 9,544 while in the same period 1,543,910 patients received medical treatment, according to the most recent report of the source.

In 16 years of work, Cuban doctors that made up the medical mission in Guatemala carried out 37,256, 511 consultations, according to official figures.

From February 2008 to October 31 this year, 134,988 cases have had surgery through the humanitarian program Operacion Milagro in Guatemala, due to ophthalmic diseases.

With the recent inauguration of the Ophthalmology hospital in Mixco, municipality of the Guatemala department, there are four such centers to give free treatment to low-income population.

At present, a total of 468 health workers carry out their labor in Guatemala, 52 out of whom belong to the Operacion Milagro program and 156 have degrees in Nursing.

They offer their services in 16 out of the 22 Guatemalan departments, working in 23 medical brigades for the comprehensive health program and four Ophthalmology hospitals.

President Otto Perez Molina has publicly praised the work of the Cuban health personnel in Guatemala.
