Cuban FM Highlights Importance of Unity Summit

Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez highlighted here the importance of creating a genuinely Latin American and Caribbean organization that embraces the ideas of heroes Simon Bolivar, Jose Marti and Benito Juarez.

This is the main topic of the Unity Summit today and tomorrow in the Mayan Riviera that brings together the Rio Group and the Latin American and Caribbean Summit for Integration and Development with the attendance of 25 Heads of State and Government and high-ranking delegations from the regionâÖs 33 countries.

"It can be a historical summit", stressed the Cuban FM adding that he hopes the gathering agrees to create a new regional organization.

Foreign ministers -he said- have made progress in completing the required documents for its creation, while foreseeing Venezuela as the venue for the next Unity Summit in 2011.

Besides regional integration, the Mayan Riviera meet will also look into several other issues and adopt declarations on the reconstruction of Haiti, Argentina's sovereignty over the Falkland Islands, the need to put an end to the US blockade against Cuba and on climate change.

The draft declaration acknowledges the efforts made by several countries to support the Haitian people, stating that Haiti is a sovereign nation and the international aid should be coordinated by its government and the UN.

The Unity Summit will approve a resolution against the economic, trade and financial blockade the US government has maintained against Cuba for almost 50 years.

"Theres a unanimous position of all the countries of Latin America and the Caribbean condemning the US blockade against Cuba and they urge the US Government to immediately lift it", said the Cuban Foreign Minister in remarks to Prensa Latina.
