Cuban Five’s Relatives Mourn Death of US Rev. Lucius Walker
Family members of the five Cuban antiterrorist fighters imprisoned in the US expressed their sadness for the recent death of American Reverend Lucius Walker, a leader of the Pastors for Peace Movement.
Among a crowd waiting to sign a condolence book for the death of Cuba-friend Walker outside of the Cuban Friendship Institute (ICAP) were relatives of the five Cuban antiterrorist fighters –known as the Cuban Five–, who wanted to express their mourning for the loss.
Mirta Rodriguez, Antonio Guerrero’s (one of the Cuban Five) mother, assured that Lucius will never be forgotten in Cuba and that he will be present in the day-to-day fight for the freedom of the Cuban Five. She said when the day comes that the Cuban Five are released the US reverend will be present in their hearts.
Olga Salanueva, Rene Gonzalez’ wife, told ACN that the five of them were shaken by the news. “We will always remember him –she said–, not only because of his support of our relatives, but also because of what he means to the Cuban people.”
When Fernando [Gonzalez, one of the Cuban Five] called me on the telephone, I told him that Lucius had passed away and with a shaky voice he said: “What a loss to mankind!” said Rosa Aurora Freijanes, Gonzalez’ wife.
“We met him and we loved him since the very moment we learned about his work and history in support of Cuba and the Revolution, his great work, collecting donations and bringing them to Cuba even risking frequently his own life,” Freijanes added.
Elizabeth Palmeiro, Ramon Labañino’s wife said she told her husband via telephone that a great man had died but that she was sure that the rest of the Pastors for Peace’s members will keep up with Walker’s work.
Rev. Lucius Walker was one of the leaders of the movement in solidarity of the with the cause of the Cuban Five who have been imprisoned in the US since 1998 for facing terrorist groups that organize and lead actions against the Cuban people.
