Since the arrival of Cuban medical brigades to this country, after the devastating Hurricane Mitch in 1998, Cuban doctors have provided some 38,832,281 consultations.
 
According to the director of the Brigade currently working in the Central American country, Dr. Manolo Torres, door to door community work by teams of doctors and other professionals have had the greatest impact.
 
Data provided by the Cuban diplomatic mission indicate that 445 medical collaborators are currently working in Guatemala, including many in remote areas, PL reported.
 
Cuban healthcare workers are offering services in 19 of the country’s departments, covering 70% of the nation’s territory, organized in 23 comprehensive family medicine brigades and four ophthalmology units, reported Carlos de Céspedes, the island’s ambassador quoted by Al Día.

In addition to staffing four important ophthalmology centers, Cuban doctors offer specialized service in the areas of surgery, orthopedics, gynecology-obstetrics, pediatrics and dentistry.
