Cuban Diplomats Call to Intercede for Humanitarian Trip with USA
The Embassy of Cuba in the Dominican Republic has called to intercede with US President Obama on behalf of Cuban anti-terrorist fighter Rene Gonzalez so that he can visit his brother, seriously ill in Cuba.
In a note released to the press in Santo Domingo, the Cuban Embassy explains that Roberto, the brother of Rene, is gravely ill with cancer in a Havana hospital.
Rene served an internationally repudiated over-13-year prison sentence in the United States, and as an additional punishment, he must remain under supervised release in the United States for another three years, so he cannot be with his brother in this critical moment.
His lawyer Phil Horowitz filed an emergency motion before Judge Joan Lenard, from the South Florida District, asking for permission for Rene to travel to Cuba for two weeks to visit his brother in hospital.
The motion is not special. It is usual for a defendant to ask permission to the court on the grounds of an emergency to travel due to the serious condition of a relative.
"It is a call we are making to every just men and women worldwide to intercede with the US Government on behalf of Rene, so that he can travel," concludes the note.
