Cuban Anthropologists Debate Race
Cuban anthropologists are placing great importance on researching and scientifically debating the race issue, as a vital theme for the good of the nation and national unity.
Researcher Niurka Nuñez told Prensa Latina that the issue is a priority for defending national identity and the country's unity, which is why it should be addressed from the perspective racial relations.
It is not very feasible to maintain the tradition of analyzing race from the aspect of discrimination and racism towards black people, but instead, it must be seen from another perspective, because "we all are part of this conglomerate, regardless of our color," Nuñez said.
"We have to address it from the unity of diversity, as a nation," stated Nuñez, who called for reflecting objectively about the issue to find solutions to the situation.
Nuñez' spoke to Prensa Latina at the Cuban Institute of Anthropology (ICA) after the launch of the book "Racial Relations in Cuba, Contemporary Studies," a valuable contribution to the debate on racism with a current, scientific approach.
The book is a result of work by a group of ICA researchers, among them Odalys Buscaron, Lazara Carrazana, Rodrigo Espina, Ana Julia Garcia, Estrella Gonzalez, Niurka Nuñez, Maria Magdalena Perez, Pablo Rodriguez and Hernan Tirado.
