Cuban Ambassador: US Blockade Flagrant Violation of Human Rights

Ernesto Melendez, Cuba’s Ambassador to Sweden, denounced the US blockade against Cuba, a flagrant, massive and
systematic violation of the Cuban people’s human rights.

This criminal infringement of international law by various American administrations was presented by Melendez in a report named ¨Necessity of ending the commercial, economical and financial blockade imposed by the United States against Cuba¨, reported Prensa Latina news agency.

At a press conference in Stockholm, the Cuban diplomat said that this blockade is the main obstacle to Cuba’s development, to Cubans well-being and to the recovery work in the Caribbean nation after the passing
of Hurricanes Gustav and Ike.

Melendez also criticized the extraterritorial character of the regulations contained in these hostile policies, which have reached unheard-of levels under the George W. Bush administration.

The Cuban Ambassador pointed out that only last year the US blockade cost Cuba a similar amount of money to the damage caused by Hurricanes Gustav and Ike, calculated at around 5 billion dollars.
