Cuba Wins Gold, Bronze in Math Olympiad

Cuba won four medals, one gold and three bronze, at the 24th Ibero-American Mathematical Olympiad, held in Mexico, Granma newspaper reported Wednesday.

Student Reynaldo Gil got 38 points and won the only gold medal for Cuba. This competition has brought together 81 competitors from 21 countries.

Gil, as well as Jorge Estrada, Jose Moraguez, and Daniel Otero are currently attending the Central American Mathematics Tournament, taking place in the Colombian capital.

Havana is now hosting the 14th Ibero-American Chemistry Olympiad, with the participation of contestants from Argentina, Brazil, Bolivia, Colombia, El Salvador, Spain, Guatemala, Mexico, Peru, Portugal, Uruguay, Venezuela, Costa Rica, and Cuba.

About 279 Cuban students have attended regional and international Olympiads since 2000 up to date, 231 of them have been awarded, official figures stated.
