Cuba, UNICEF Improve Breastfeeding

The United Nations Children''s Fund (UNICEF) and the Cuban government will continue their efforts to encourage the exclusive use of breastfeeding, its head in Havana, Anna Lucia D''Emilio, said today.

D'Emilio said the country has the conditions to ensure that nutrition to newborn babies, due to the legal guarantees for the mothers and the implementation of non-commercial medical policies.

Almost 50 percent of six-month-old babies have access to that food, but the habit of breastfeeding decreases. For that reason, the agency will plan to get closer to mothers in their communities, D'Emilio said.

The official arrived in this city, located about 500 kilometers east of Havana, to verify in situ the operation of breast milk bank of the province, attached to the "Ana Betancourt de Mora" Maternity Hospital.

She expressed the commitment of the UN agency with the Ministry of Public Health to boost donations of technologies and financial support to eight centers like that existing in Cuba, and others in developing countries.
