Cuba Stresses Need to Revitalize UN General Assembly

Cuban diplomat Ismara Vargas highlighted on Thursday the need to revitalize the United Nations General Assembly and to strengthen the independence of this body of international discussion.

According to Prensa Latina news agency, during a plenary session dedicated to the analysis of this topic, the Cuban official said that revitalizing the UN General Assembly is decisive in the efforts to reform the United Nations.

Vargas added that as long as the General Assembly is not able to exercise its authority, it will not be a completely democratic and effective body.

She also spoke of the need to agree on an adequate balance among the main UN bodies and urged all UN member states to put an end to any efforts to transfer topics in the agenda of the Assembly to the Security Council.

The Cuban diplomat added that the Security Council should strictly comply with the provisions of the Charter and all the resolutions of the General Assembly as the main body of the United Nations.

She also expressed Cuba’s concern over the setting of norms and definitions by the Security Council regarding issues and areas beyond its legal competence.
