Cuba Stresses Importance of Conventional Weapons Ban

Cuba stressed the importance of the Convention on Certain Conventional Weapons Bans, for its contribution to the development of humanitarian international law and to preserve the legitimate security interests of the states that are parties to the convention.

"This balance has been a mainstay for the proper functioning of the Convention", said the Cuban representative Rodolfo Benitez at the fourteenth Annual Conference of the High Contracting Parties to Amended Protocol II.

Benitez said that Cuba, as well as 10 other countries, is part of the original Additional Protocol II, but it is not part of the Amended Protocol, referring to mines, boobytraps and other devices.

Benitez said that, even if Cuba is not part of the protocol, it complies with most of its regulations.

The Cuban representative considered dangerous and unacceptable the proposal promoted by some countries to end the original Protocol II of the Convention on Certain Conventional Weapons.
