Cuba Slams US Blockade at EU Legislature

Cuba condemned, during a European Parliament's plenary session held in this city, a report about the UN General Assembly resolution, which requests the end of the US blockade imposed on the island.

In a meeting with Eurodeputies, attended by Cuban Ambassador to Belgium and the European Union Elio Rodriguez, participants denounced how the economic, trade and financial siege is still intact.

Several actions have been taken this year to fine, confiscate and hinder Cuban trade transactions and those from third countries to Cuba, they said.

The diplomat stressed that just a month ago, US President Barack Obama officially notified as "national interest" maintaining the blockade, protected in the Law of Trade with the Enemy, in force since 1917.

That law prohibits all kinds of exchange with territories that are considered a threat, and is currently applied only against Cuba.

Rodriguez said that the blockade measures are still in force as a clear violation of the international law, and have already caused damages assessed at over $96 billion, the equivalent to around $236.2 billion at the current rate of exchange.

The ambassador also stated that the Cuban Revolution will have on October 28, for the 18th consecutive year, a new and important diplomatic victory, when the international community votes in favor of a Cuban bill to be presented to the UN General Assembly.
