Cuba Reiterates Willingness to Respectful Dialogue with US
Cuba reiterated today in the UN General Assembly it willingness to try finding a solution to the dispute with the United States, through respectful dialogue and cooperation on issues of common interest.
Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez of Cuba's presented the position set at the plenary of the Assembly devoted to discuss, for the twenty-third consecutive year since 1992, the issue of the necessity to end the economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed by Washington on the island for more than half a century.
The Cuban resolution was approved by 188 of the 193 members of the UN, with two votes against and three abstentions.
'We invite the government of the United States to reach a mutually respectful relationship, on a reciprocal basis, based on sovereign equality, the principles of international law and the United Nations Charter, ".
Rodriguez said the island will interact civilly with its northern neighbor, which keeps the siege on the Greater Antilles ignoring the almost unanimous rejection of the international community as well.
The Straits of Florida, the people of the United States and Cuba have always had deep ties, said the diplomat, who noted that despite old tensions and attempts by violent extremists and terrorist groups to provoke, there has been no war, nor any young Americans have died on the island.
'Although it has been slandered, Cuba has never been a threat to the national security of the United States (...) and hospitably welcomes the Americans to visit the island if their government allows it (...), " he said here.
Also, the foreign minister said opinion polls and statements show that from various sectors of American society,politicians, scholars, businessmen, religious personalities and citizens are advocating for an end to the blockade and the normalization of bilateral relations.
In his address to the Assembly, Rodriguez pointed to other signs of hostility from Washington, as the absurd inclusion of Cuba in its unilateral list of state sponsors of international terrorism and the illegal use of information technology as a destabilizing weapons.
According to the diplomat, the decision to eliminate the economic, commercial and financial blockade would be welcome worldwide and would be a unitary influence in favor of peace and of peaceful resolution of conflicts and differences.
President Barack Obama has all the constitutional prerogatives, without going to Congress to modify aspects of the blockade and enter a new, decisive and dynamic era in the bilateral relations, he said.
Before Cuba, speakers from several continents raised their voice in their national capacity or on behalf of intergovernmental organizations to demand the lifting of sanctions imposed for more than five decades.
The Group of 77 and China, bringing together 134 of the 193 UN members; the Non-Aligned Movement, composed of 120 states; the African Group, the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States, the Caribbean Community and Common Market of the South demanded an end to the siege.
Countries also demanded the removal of the blockade, among others, Russia, China, Mexico, Vietnam, Bolivia, India, Algeria, Egypt, Venezuela, South Africa, Brazil and Belarus.
