Cuba Recognizes Spanish Solidarity with Anti-Terrorist Prisoners

Cuba''s new ambassador to Spain, Eugenio Martinez, expressed gratitude for the huge demonstrations of solidarity from the Spanish people in regard to the unjust imprisonment that four anti-terrorist fighters from his country have been suffering in U.S. prisons since 1998.

The clamor for the release of these men, who on September 12 marked 15 years of captivity, resonated during an emotional concert held at the Galileo Galilei Hall in this capital, the second held in this European country.

During the event that went on until midnight, artists from the island and Spain sang together in support of the Cuban Five, as Gerardo Hernandez, Antonio Guerrero, Fernando Gonzalez, Ramon Labañino, and Rene Gonzalez are internationally known.

After completing his sentence in October 2011 and then a period of supervised release, Rene Gonzalez was able to return this year to the Caribbean nation, after renouncing his U.S. citizenship.

The head of the Caribbean delegation called on the solidarity movement to use every opportunity to bring back Gerardo, Antonio, Fernando, and Ramon, so that they can be reunited with Rene and their loved ones at home in Cuba.

Spanish songwriters Jose Maria Alfaya and German Coppini , Argentinean Sepiurca Zukin and Cuban troubadours Ismael de la Torre and Orlis Pineda, among other musicians, participated in the concert, organized by the Madrid Committee to Free the Five.

During the activity, many messages of support to this solidarity initiative were read, including one sent by the president of the Cuban Institute of Friendship with the Peoples, Kenia Serrano.
