The 10th Congress of Marine Sciences takes a break today to commemorate in this capital the 50th anniversary of the specialty in the Caribbean region.
 
The lecture on the issue will be given by Professor Bonnie Ponwith, of the U.S. Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
 
Delegates will also have today the opportunity to learn about the projects of the marine and coastal cooperation in the Cuban archipelago, by panelists from several institutions.
 
Participants in the event released yesterday the results of a bi-national study boosted between Havana and Washington, about the life of some species of shark around the archipelago.
 
According to the president of the Oceanographic Committee of the event, Guillermo Garcia, about 103 U.S. visitors, mostly as listeners, are attending until Nov. 20 the event at the Havana's Conference Center.
 
The also director of the National Aquarium of Cuba explained that this figure is a record, because accreditation from that country to MARCUBA (as the meeting is also identified) averaged two weeks.
 
As part of the restoration of diplomatic relations between Havana and Washington, the Congress will feature 37 works by American speakers and three executives from institutions of that nation will give lectures.
 
The vice president of the Center of Engineering and Environmental Management of Bays and Coastal Areas of Cuba, Liuba Chabalina, stated that MARCUBA is supported by more than 40 entities and five Cuban universities.
