MD Pedro A. Valdes, vice director of Cuba"s Center of Neurosciences, was elected member of the Council of the Organization for Human Brain Mapping (OMCH) at a congress held in this capital.

Sources close to Cuba"s delegation told Prensa Latina that it is the first time that Latin America integrates the OMCH board of directors and whose membership exchanged views on Cuba"s achievements and with specialists from several nations as part of the program of the five-day event.

On the importance of this election, they said it represents the culmination of a work that began with the Latin American Brain Mapping Network and whose coordination was assumed by Brazilian Edson Amaro Junior at this meeting in Beijing.

It is also a chance to integrate the developing nations to this field of sciences to fight brain disfunctions, the root of 34 percent of the damages on lost human healthy life.

The annual event, attended by 2,700 guests, is the right forum to study the structure and functions of healthy brains and malfunctions as well. This year, the event focused on magnetic resonance to map brain cortex layers, brain reactions in socio-economic events, "the Human Connector" to map brain interconnection

Related to this topic, China launched the international project Brainnetome (brain networks) that will link macroscopic networks (conectoma) with genomics, and of which Cuba is a member.
