Cuba Marks World Environment Day

Cuba on Tuesday is celebrating World Environment Day with several activities, including theoretical events at universities, cleaning, sowing plants in urban communities and reforestation works.

The national event, whose central slogan is "Sustainable energy for everyone," will be held until June 22.

A workshop on environmental pollution on June 5-6, sponsored by the Center for Pollution and Atmospheric Chemistry, the Climate Center, attached to the Institute of Meteorology, and the Cuban Meteorological Society, is part of today's agenda.

Greenhouse gas inventory, wind energy, analysis of the occurrence of weather phenomena, Saharan dust storms, their impact on cyclogenesis, and the evolution of tropical cyclones in the North Atlantic, are included in the event's scientific agenda.

At a global level, the UN Development Program chose Brazil this year as the venue of these celebrations. It will be an opportunity to invite people to assess in what areas of everyday life green economy can be applied.

Three weeks from now, Brazil will also be the venue of the Conference on Sustainable Development "Rio+20," in which world leaders will discuss the design of an environmentally-sustainable future.
