Cuba to Inaugurate Parliament on Sunday

Cuba will inaugurate the 8th Legislature of the People''s Power National Assembly on Sunday, a forum comprising 612 members who represent several sectors of society, including nearly 50 percent of women.

The parliamentarians will meet at Havana's Conference Center after being elected on February 3 by about 7.9 million citizens, about 90 percent of registered voters.

After the election, the seats will be filled by workers, farmers, teachers, doctors, scientists, writers, artists, religious leaders, students, political leaders, businesspeople, athletes and members of the armed forces from all 15 Cuban provinces.

The Assembly will be composed by 48.9 percent of women, 37 percent of blacks and mixed-race people, and 82.7 percent of university graduates, with an average age of 48 years.

Compared to the 7th Legislature, 67.2 percent of the new Parliament will be renewed.

After the inauguration of tomorrow's session, the legislators will elect the presidency of the Assembly for the next five years by secret ballot, and later, they will choose the 31 members of the Council of State, the body that will represent the Cuban State.

In that regard, they will elect the president, who is head of State and Government, the first vice president, five vice presidents, the secretary, and 23 members of the Council of State, which represents the National Assembly between its two annual regular sessions.
